MADISON COUNTY DEMOCRATIC WOMEN REGRETS THE CONFIRMATION OF SENATOR JEFF SESSIONS AS ATTORNEY-GENERAL OF THE US DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.  In this capacity, Mr. Sessions will have broad and sweeping authority over enforcement of civil rights, disability rights, and voting rights. He will also have oversight of enforcement of immigration law, employment, national security, surveillance, antitrust and housing.

“There is no mystery about the future of the Department of Justice. Mr. Sessions has been clear and consistent in his opposition to strong enforcement of civil rights, immigration reform, domestic violence programs, voting rights and more,” commented Susan Higgins, Chair of Madison County Democratic Women, “it is hard to fathom that he will be a champion for all Americans as is required by this role.”

Ms. Higgins continued, “women voters in Madison County and Alabama are alert and awake, and working hard.  I have no doubt that the Democrats will take back seats in 2018 and 2020. We are fired up and ready to go.”

Madison County Democratic Women stood with many organizations in opposing the nomination of Senator Sessions., including the NAACP, the ACLU, and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Congressional Black Caucus and many and numerous women’s rights groups.

Madison County Democratic Women is a membership organization of like-minded women and men in North Alabama who support the principles of the Democratic Party.
